SHORT BIOGRAPHY
My name is Benedek Balog, I’m 19 years old, and I was born in Budapest, Hungary. Music has always been a big part of my life, and the cello became my passion at a young age. I started learning the instrument when I was six, and since then, it has been a constant source of inspiration.

I began my studies with Zsuzsanna Antók at the St. Stephan Music School, where I built strong basics. In 2020, I continued at the St. Stephan Music High School in Budapest, studying under István Varga. Those years were transformative, as I gained valuable experience performing, competing, and growing as a musician and a person.

This year, I began a new chapter at the Hochschule der Künste Bern (HKB), studying with Professor Denis Severin. Moving to Switzerland has been both exciting and challenging, offering me fresh perspectives and opportunities to grow as a cellist.

Competitions have been a key part of my journey, including winning the Grand Prix at the János Starker National Cello Competition and being a finalist in the David Popper International Cello Competition. These experiences helped me grow under pressure and gave me confidence in my abilities.

Orchestral and chamber music are equally important to me. In 2023 summer, I played as principal cellist with the Concertgebouworkest Young in Amsterdam and in 2024 I performed with the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra. Working with talented musicians in inspiring settings has been unforgettable.

I’ve also had the chance to learn from world-class cellists like Frans Helmerson and László Fenyő in masterclasses, which have been crucial in shaping my approach to music. For me, the cello is more than an instrument - it’s a way to connect with others and express myself.
